Following the death of her wife, Ruth encounters a fearless swimmer who pushes her to confront her pain and rediscover the joy of living.

Ruth is emerging from the deep end of grief. Isolated and adrift she resolves to swim the English Channel as a way to shock herself back to life. The only problem is, she’s an absolutely terrible swimmer. This is stated bluntly by Sam - a cocky, young Northerner she meets one day on the beach.

Sam questions Ruth’s motivation when her inexperience becomes glaringly evident and with humour and candour, cracks open a chink in Ruth's grief, reminding her that life goes on.
